Hobbies

I have many interests in a variety of subjects, such as collecting 1:64 scale trucks. Sports are not one of them, sitting and watching a ball game of any sort holds absolutely no interest for me. Getting outside during the summer months is something I like and try to do as much as possible, always trying to tan and not burn. My primary interest definitely is in trains, with computers coming in second.

Rail Fanning

Sitting by the tracks and watching trains, known as rail fanning, is a common activity during the summer and year round. I am located about an hour, north or south, from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) and the Union Pacific (UP) railroads. The UP runs through north central Iowa and is part of the trans-continental route between Chicago, IL and the west coast. This line is generally busier than the BNSF and carries a UP manifest in the Iowa country sidevariety of trains, intermodal, coal and general merchandise.

The BNSF runs through southern Iowa and generally carries coal from the powder river basin in Wyoming to points further east. It is also part of the route of the California Zephyr which runs between Chicago, IL and Emeryville, CA near Oakland. Watching long coal trains with a variety of power configurations makes for an interesting day of rail fanning.

Trains have been a primary interest for most of my life, if you have any rail related questions, please feel free to contact me. I also put some of my rail fanning trips online in the form of video. Check out my YouTube channel to see my latest excursions.

Computers

You could say I have a one-track mind, but since I like trains, that doesn't sound too bad. I enjoy computer simulations such as Microsoft Train Simulator and Microsoft Flight Simulator. I have spent many hours in both simulators, both driving the respective vehicle or researching rail and airline routes. When programming a train activity or running it, I try to keep as close to what would run on that route as possible. This doesn't always mean that the computer agrees with running long trains and may freeze up on me, but such is the case with virtual railroading. Planning and building are about as much fun as running the trains as well.

In flight simulator, I have researched real world airline flights and programmed them into the simulator. Therefore, while I'm flying and I hear a flight on the radio, I know that, at least at one time, I'm hearing a flight that actually exists. Flying over terrain that isn't very detailed, or hours on autopilot with little to do can get boring. However, it's also an opportunity to read or think as the miles tick down. As a quadriplegic, I know some things in the real world aren't accessible to me. Landing a Boeing 747 at busy Dallas-Ft. Worth airport allows for feeling a part of that world I normally could not experience.

Other games I play include Starcraft, one that a friend and I have been playing since before my high school graduation in 2000. The Sims, and other similar games have been played, but these usually haven't equaled the time in the other forms of entertainment.
