Positions
As most people, I have certain views on particular subjects. These are my primary positions and activities I support, but I do have others that aren't mentioned here. Please feel free to contact me with questions or further information. Church related work can be found on the beliefs page.
CHAMP Camp
As far as I can remember, I have always used a ventilator. With this, activities such as swimming, climbing and many other 'regular' childhood activities are not possible. However, one place that I have found turns
traditional thinking and activities upside down. Living a lifetime with a major disability, I know that some things are difficult, but can be achieved if wanted. CHAMP Camp is a week long camp for children requiring tracheostomies and those requiring technological respiratory assistance. Held in central Indiana, I first started going to camp as a camper in 1993.
Except for two years of college, I have gone every year since. In 2000, I started going as a counselor and have had many experiences and good memories in this role. CHAMP Camp is a place where a person's abilities, not disabilities, are used to the fullest. Everyone fits in and doesn't feel like an outsider as is common in the 'real world' outside camp. From year to year I get to watch the children grow in maturity, independence and many other ways.
As I get older, my body is less able to take the work and requirements to be the counselor I feel I need to be. I know that soon I will not be able to work in this capacity, but I continue to look forward to every year and its unique experiences. No matter my age or abilities, CHAMP Camp will always hold a lasting memory, one that I hope many children and adults get to know and become part of.
PFBC
For many years, I have watched how people walk. As I grew older and became more active, I noticed children in particular, and myself, often went barefoot. In further research, I came across Parents for Barefoot Children, or PFBC as I tend to shorten it. From looking through this site, observation and other sites, I promote having children be barefoot as much as possible. Swimming is likely the most common activity for kids to
do barefoot, but every day activities and many others can safely be done barefoot. Obstacles such as glass and other problems need to be watched for, but older children will know this and be able to notice them. Many foot related diseases can also be prevented and helped by going barefoot.
Some activities that are generally done while shod can be completed just as well, if not better, while barefoot. Click on the items below for further information as well as pictures of children doing these activities barefoot.
Whether it is these or other activities, let your children do it barefoot. If they aren't used to it, some activities may require an adjustment period while going without shoes. If needed, flip-flops or sandals without socks are the next best thing, and slipping them off is easy and can help with transition. An article from August 2010, talks about how barefoot is best for children, especially in the early years.
Studies have also shown that it is beneficial for adults to go barefoot. As with children, it will take time to be familiar with surfaces and walking if shoes have been a regular part of clothing.
Stem Cell Research
Having a spinal cord injury, I am well aware of the studies using stem cells. This field of study has great potential to help individuals like myself as well as many others with other types of difficulties. I also believe that certain forms of research need to be further explored and some more popular methods be abandoned.
The two types of cells are Embryonic Stem Cells (ESC) and Adult Stem Cells (ASC). ASC are obtained from cells in the person using the cells or someone else. These cells can be found in many places such as the nose, bone marrow and other sources. ESC is derived from unfertilized human eggs, or potential human lives. It is said that ESC is easier to transform into any needed cell. However, ASC has been shown to have the same potential with much fewer side effects.
I fully support research using ASC and its potential, as well as current, uses to help maintain and improve the body. After over two decades of sitting, I don't hold much potential of major improvements in this body I was given. However, the most potential for others and myself does appear to be ASC. As this does not require the destruction of another human life, I look for research to expand in this area and give support toward this end.
